I did the following test: input or paste some Inuktitut characters into the DaVinci text field then select that text and copy it, and paste it into the Unicode Text Analyser at fontspace(dot)com/unicode/analyzer. The DaVinci default display is odd and needs revising by the programmers, because it lets you select a font family, but then is not actually displaying it, or not displaying non-Latin characters. Other plugins still tied to the DaVinci UI for text input and editing, will have the same limitations in the text field as the subtitles issue. The plugin, Three Line Drop, is apparently able to display the Unicode text correctly within the video because it enables font selection. Unicode text is probably being recognised and isn’t being garbled into some other encoding: the boxes are a good sign in this respect. So what is happening in the DaVinci default user interface and with the plugins is that the UI font in the text edit field does not support Inuktitut characters (in my case), and the program does not use any fallback to system fonts for unsupported characters. Closed captioning will now appear on your screen. notdef glyphs, which indicate that the font being used does not contain a glyph for the character in the text string.
